Commodores rout Arkansas

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four different Commodores recorded double-digit scoring efforts on Sunday afternoon versus the Arkansas Razorbacks en route to a 78-58 win at Memorial Gym.

With the win, Vanderbilt is now 13-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action, while the Razorbacks drop to 13-4 on the season and 1-3 in SEC play. The win also makes Vandy 8-0 at Memorial Gym this season and 11-1 all-time versus Arkansas in the building.

Jasmine Lister led the way with a game-high 19 points (7-of-13) and six assists. Christina Foggie finished with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. With Foggie’s three made three-point field goals (175), she moved past Paige Redman (173) for seventh all-time in school history for made three-pointers.

275vuwbb011313clarke.jpgTiffany Clarke scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Elan Brown finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Brown also added four assists.

As a team, Vanderbilt dished out 20 assists on the day, while Arkansas only managed 11. The 20 assists marks the fourth time this season in which Vandy has had 20 or more assists in a game and three of those of come in SEC contests.

For the game, the Commodores scorched the Arkansas defense at the tune of 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field and 42 percent (8-of-19) beyond the arc. After turning the ball over 11 times in the first half, the Commodores only turned it over five times in the second half.

Arkansas shot 37 percent from the field, but could not find the range from behind the three-point line, as the Razorbacks converted on 1-of-15 (6.7 percent) tries.

Quistelle Williams finished with 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots for the Razorbacks, while Sarah Watkins added 10 points and five boards off the bench.

Coming out of the locker room after the break, Vanderbilt picked up right where it left off, as the Commodores used a 9-0 run to take a 52-29 lead. That lead would extend to as many as 24 in the second half.

Vanderbilt used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to take a 16-6 lead. Foggie and Lister combined to score 12 of the first 18 points of the game. The Commodores then used an 8-0 run to extend their lead right before the break.

Foggie led all scorers with 12 points at the half to lead Vandy to a 43-29 lead. Foggie also contributed three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Lister was the only other player in double-digits with 10 points.

For the half, Vandy shot an extremely efficient 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the field. The Commodores also outrebounded the Razorbacks 19-17 in the first half.

Arkansas shot just 33 percent (12-of-36) from the field and 14 percent (1-of-7) from three-point range, but did force 11 Vanderbilt turnovers.

Williams led the Razorbacks with eight points in the first half on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor.

Vanderbilt will be back on the road after taking Thursday off, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU on Sunday, January 20. Tipoff at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center is set for 2:00 p.m. CT.
