SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The 2012 edition of the SEC Championships has wrapped up from Sea Island, Ga., and the Commodores have ended the tournament in ninth place with a final total of 869 (289-286-294). Sophomore Charlie Ewing led all Vanderbilt players with a three-round total of 215 (74-70-71), which tied him for 23rd place individually.

Vanderbilt finished one stroke back of eighth-place Tennessee and three strokes behind seventh-place Kentucky.

“We were a little unlucky with our draw today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “The conditions this morning were very rough, with a lot of wind and a little rain, and we played the toughest part of the golf course during those conditions. The forecast called for more wind throughout the day, but it never came, and those teams that had later tee times had a nice day with calmer conditions.

“It was a good challenging day, and we came close. We had a lot of fire in us today, and overcame the rough conditions early on to put together a couple of good rounds.”

Junior Will Snipes was Vanderbilt’s second-best finisher behind Ewing with a 217 (73-68-76), which tied him for 31st. Adam Hofmann carded a 218 (71-74-73, T37), Hunter Stewart a 219 (71-74-74, T39), and Ben Fogler a 230 (78-76-76, T54).

Alabama led wire-to-wire to win the tournament with a final total of 828 (272-274-282). Auburn came in second with an 834 (277-280-277).

The Crimson Tide’s Justin Thomas won medalist honors with a seven-under par, 203. He defeated fellow teammate Bobby Wyatt by two strokes.

The Commodores will now await their fate for selection into one of six NCAA regional sites in a few weeks.
