First Day Results

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – Vanderbilt finished the first day of the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga., with a total of 289, which is good for a tie for ninth at the par-70, 6,991-yard Seaside Course. Senior Adam Hofmann and freshman Hunter Stewart lead the Commodores with a one-over par, 71.

The Commodores, who are tied with South Carolina and Mississippi State for ninth, were in a tie for fourth heading into the 18th hole with a four-over par score, but all four of VU’s counting scores combined for a six-over score on the 18th hole. Despite the bad finishing hole, Vanderbilt is still only two strokes back of eighth, three of seventh, and four of sixth.

“That last hole was tough to swallow, but our guys are doing good and they felt like they did a lot of good things out there today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “Conditions were really good today, and a bit more windy than the practice rounds. We’re in a good place right now and we’re looking forward to tomorrow.

Other counting scores for Vanderbilt on Friday, besides Hofmann and Stewart’s 71’s, were junior Will Snipes with a 73 (T-35) and sophomore Charlie Ewing with a 74 (T-42). Freshman Ben Fogler posted a 78 (T-58) to round out the Vanderbilt scores.

Alabama leads the team tournament with a 272, one stroke better than second-place Georgia, and the Crimson Tide’s Bobby Wyatt leads all individuals after shooting a five-under par, 65, on Friday.

The second round continues Saturday from Sea Island.
