MOBILE, Ala. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team began their spring season with a strong finish Tuesday at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, ending the tournament in fifth place with a final total of 867 (290-290-287). Sophomore Charlie Ewing had the best finish of his career, leading the Commodores with a three-round score of 215 (73-70-72), which placed him in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.

“It was a good start to the spring,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “Charlie played very well and Hunter battled back today after his second round on Monday. We had a chance to finish even higher, but Illinois and Wake Forest each made birdies on their last holes and clipped us at the end. It’s encouraging to see our guys finish the way they did today.”

The Commodores finished one stroke back of Illinois, who finished fourth with an 866, and two strokes back of Wake Forest, who ended the tournament in third place with an 865. Middle Tennessee State claimed the team title with a final total of 858 (288-282-288).

Senior Trey DelGreco posted the team’s best round of the day with a 69, and ended the tournament with a 216 (76-71-69) and tied for 10th. Sophomore Mills Rendell shot a 231 (76-79-76) for the tournament and ended the tournament in a tie for 70th.
