`Dores roll in exhibition opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four Commodores finished in double-figures to lead the No. 16/17 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team past Alabama-Huntsville, 81-53 Saturday, Nov. 3, at Memorial Gym.

Junior Jasmine Lister led Vanderbilt with 18 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the field, while also tied for the team lead in assists with three. Senior Tiffany Clarke finished with 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds, while also registering three assists.

Five of the six freshmen on the squad saw their first unofficial action as a Commodore. Kendall Shaw scored 13 points off the bench, while Heather Bowe recorded 12 points and five rebounds.

Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb’s squad got a lot of production out of the bench, as 43 of the 81 points for the Commodores came from the non-starters.

For the game, Vandy shot 54.4 percent from the field, while holding the Chargers to 35.8 percent. The Commodores also won the battle of the boards as they outrebounded Alabama-Huntsville 40-32.

Alabama-Huntsville turned the ball over 30 times compared to Vanderbilt’s 20.

The Chargers’ Jordan Smith led all scorers with 23 points, while Jasmine Hammon scored 10.

Vanderbilt went into the locker room at halftime with a 42-24 lead. Lister led all scorers with 12 first half points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.

As a team, the Commodores shot 48.4 percent from the field, while holding Alabama-Huntsville to 37 percent. Vanderbilt’s stifling defense forced 17 Charger turnovers.

Vanderbilt begins the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 10, when the Commodores host McNeese State in Memorial Gym at 12 p.m.
