Highlights | Schrann and Holzer Interview
NASHVILLE, Tenn. —The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team capped its three-game homestand with an 81-72 win over LSU on Sunday, January 29 at Memorial Gym. The Commodores improved to 16-5, 4-4 in SEC play. The Lady Tigers fell to 14-7, 4-4 in league action.
Vanderbilt was led by an impressive 29 points from guard Kady Schrann. It marked a career-high for the freshman. She went 11-15 from the field, including 3-5 from three while connecting on all four trips to the foul line.
Schrann’s performance was coupled with 18 points and 15 rebounds from redshirt sophomore center Stephanie Holzer. Holzer’s 15 rebounds matched her career-high. Also in double-figures for Vanderbilt were Christina Foggie (14 points) and Jasmine Lister (12 points). Lister dished out a game-high seven assists.
The 81 points scored by Vanderbilt were the most LSU has given up all season.
The Lady Tigers were led by 18 points Bianca Lutley. LaSondra Barret added 17 points, mostly at the foul line where she went 7-11. Barret also grabbed nine rebounds. Adrienne Webb joined the pair in double-figures with 11 points, while Courtney Jones just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
LSU Head Coach Nikki Caldwell made a conscious effort to deny Vanderbilt sophomore guard Christina Foggie, who was coming off a 34-point performance against No. 17/15 Georgia on Thursday night.
Her plan worked in the first half, as Foggie was scoreless and had attempted just three shots, but Schrann was the beneficiary and took what she was given, scoring 12 in the opening frame to help the Commodores lead 33-27 at the break.
In the second half, LSU didn’t have an answer for Schrann or Foggie, as they scored 17 and 14 points, respectively. Also a factor in helping the Commodores pull away was Holzer, who almost had a double-double in the second half alone (10 points, nine rebounds).
Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb pointed out the unsung hero behind the performances of Foggie and Schrann this week, Jasmine Lister. Lister had seven assists tonight after having six on Thursday against the Lady Bulldogs.
“Jasmine is giving up a lot of the stats to other people,” Balcomb said.
Balcomb and Schrann both acknowledged that LSU’s focus on Foggie is what allowed the rookie to have such a big night.
“They left (Schrann) open and she took advantage,” Balcomb explained. “Kady can score, she’s just been letting other people score.”
“They went box-and-one on Foggie so I just took what they gave me,” Schrann said, summing up her game.
Vanderbilt concludes the first half of SEC play with a 4-4 mark as the calendar flips to February. Melanie Balcomb’s teams have historically fared better in February, with a .708 winning percentage during the year’s second month, compared to just .627 in January over her first nine years.
The Commodores will look to extend their two-game winning streak on Thursday, February 2, at Auburn. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CT in Auburn, Ala.
