Dores trail USC, ECU after day one

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Vanderbilt swimming team trails in a pair of dual meets in Columbia, S.C., after day one of events. The Commodores trail South Carolina, 130-34, and East Carolina, 110-54.

The highlight was a victory by freshman Chrissy Oberg in the 200 yard backstroke. She posted a time of 2:02.00. She bested South Carolina’s Elisabeth Worrell by 2.92 seconds in the event.

The two-day meet opened with the 200 freestyle relay and the Commodores finishing fifth . Melissa Roberts, Chelsea Morey, Lauren Torres and Caroline Thomas swam the event in 1:40.29.

Elly Faulkner was the top finisher for Vanderbilt in the 200 yard IM. Faulkner posted a time of 2:09.73.

In the first long-distance event, Erika Deardorf placed third in the 500 yard freestyle. The junior posted a time of 5:01.54.

Senior Laura Dillon then finished fourth in the 100 yard backstroke, with a time of 1:06.36. She was just .24 seconds out of third place.

Oberg’s 200 yard backstroke win was followed by a fourth place finish for Caroline Thomas in the 100 yard freestyle. Thomas posted a time of 52.94.

Torres was the top-finisher in the 200 yard butterfly, the final individual event of the day, placing seventh with a time of 2:08.49.

The Commodores then placed third in the 400 yard medley relay. The team of Oberg, Dillon, Torres and Thomas posted a mark of 3:55.40.

The event concludes on Saturday, January 28, starting at 9:00 a.m. Central.
