MG Blog: Carmel Cup wraps up

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Commodores tied Texas Tech in stroke play and in match play on Sunday, but the Red Raiders came away with a 19-13 win in the inaugural Carmel Cup at the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Club.

Both teams tallied eight points on Sunday in a modified medal-match play format, and each team shot a combined 605 for eight players.

Trey DelGreco posted Vanderbilt’s lowest round on Sunday with a 71, and the team’s lowest three-round score of the weekend with a 219 (78-70-71). Adam Hofmann and Will Snipes following DelGreco with a 73 on Sunday, and each tallied a 225 for the weekend. Texas Tech’s Clement Sordet won medalist honors for the tournament.

Hofmann received some hardware at a post game awards ceremony after claiming a putting contest on Thursday night.

Coaches Match Correction

Assistant coach Dusty Smith alerted me of a mistake I made in Saturday’s blog – the competition with the coaches was between assistants and head coaches, a competition, Smith wryly admitted, that was won by the assistant coaches.

Coach Pitino Sighting

Louisville men’s basketball head coach Rick Pitino was seen playing a round of golf at Pebble Beach on Sunday with two of his sons. The Commodores men’s basketball team travels to Louisville on December 2nd in a nationally televised game on ESPN.

Next Year’s Carmel Cup

Preparations are being made for another Carmel Cup in 2012 – things are still in the preliminary phases, but Vanderbilt and Texas Tech are scheduled to return to the Pebble Beach area next year.
