Hofmann shoots 77 on day one of East Regional

RADFORD, Va. — Vanderbilt junior Adam Hofmann shot a five-over 77 in the opening round of the three-day NCAA East Region Championship at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.

Follow Hofmann through live scoring of the NCAA East Regional.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Hoffman was selected as an individual competitor at the Regional Championship after leading the Commodores with a 73.3 stroke average this season.

Hofmann carded 12 pars on Thursday, making birdie on the 426-yard eighth hole. Only the top individual whose team is not in the top five will advance through the East Regional to the NCAA National Championship May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.

“Adam didn’t’ get any breaks today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “He played a lot better than his score indicated…he couldn’t make a putt, and he had a bad break or two. He hit some really good shots, and I think he’s going to play solid tomorrow.

“He’s positive and he knows his game is solid. It’s just a matter of time before the breaks go his way.”

Georgia Tech’s Kyle Scott holds a two-stroke lead on the field after shooting a four-under 68 through the first 18 holes. Oklahoma’s Abraham Ancer stands in second place, with four players tied for third.

In team competition, Georgia Tech holds a six-shot advantage over Duke. Kent State, Oklahoma and Coastal Carolina round out the top five with 36 holes remaining.

Hofmann is scheduled to tee off in Friday’s second round at 9 a.m. CT, playing with Yale’s Sam Bernstein and Penn State’s T.J. Howe.
