TAYLOR, Mich. – Vanderbilt’s inspired run at the NCAA Bowling Championship fell just short Saturday as the Commodores fell to Maryland-Eastern Shore in the title match, 4 games to 2.
“We did what it took to win and just came up short,” said Coach John Williamson, whose team at one point in the season was simply hoping to make the tournament field. “We battled and fought all week. I told our team that all we wanted was a chance to win and we definitely had that chance. I am proud of what this team accomplished.”
Vanderbilt gained its finals berth earlier in the day by upsetting second-seeded Nebraska for the second straight time in the double-elimination tournament.
In the title match, a best four-of-seven format, Maryland-Eastern Shore jumped out to win the first game but Vanderbilt won the next two behind stellar bowling by junior Brittni Hamilton and sophomore Sarah O’Brien. The Hawks were able to win the next three games by close margins to win their second title in four years with their veteran, internationally dominated team.
Hamilton was voted to the all-tournament team for her play. The second place finish is Vanderbilt’s second best finish ever; it won the 2007 championship.
