Bowlers finish third in Maryland

Feb. 20, 2011

BALTIMORE, Md. — Vanderbilt dropped a close opening round match to Maryland-Eastern Shore and defeated Sacred Heart in the consolation final to take third place at the Morgan State Invitational. Nebraska topped the Hawks to win the team title.

Two Commodores earned all-tournament recognition. Brittni Hamilton placed second individually and Jessica Earnest was fifth. Both had solid days during Saturday’s team games with Hamilton finishing plus-78 over the five games and Earnest at plus-35 (over 200 average). Samantha Hesley was 15th and Sarah O’Brien 17th.

In the opening best four-of-seven Sunday, Vanderbilt had its chances early but lost the opening two games by three pins and four pins, respectively. Those close encounters gave UMES the momentum it needed to win, 4-1.

In the consolation game, after an opening tie, Vanderbilt rattled off three straight wins with two of those games coming by just three pins each.

The Commodores travel to the Holiday Classic in Bessemer, Alabama next weekend.
