While freshman Caroline Thomas a school record in the 100 yard freestyle, it was not quite enough as the Vanderbilt swim team was edged by Tulane, 155-125, in action on Saturday, November 5, in New Orleans.
Thomas set the mark at 52.11, breaking a record held by Jenn Molchan. Thomas won the event by nearly two seconds.
Senior Laura Dillon also scored a pair of first-place finishes for Vanderbilt, taking home wins in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.
Other Commodore victories came from junior Erika Deardorf in the 1000 yard freestyle, freshman Lauren Torres in the 200 yard freestyle and Chrissy Oberg in the 200 yard backstroke. Vanderbilt also took a victory in the 200 yard medley relay, swam by Oberg, Sarah Lynch, Jess Eccherand Thomas.
Vanderbilt put together several impressive performances. After winning three of the first four events (200 yard medley relay, 1000 yard free and 200 yard free), the Commodores went 1-2-3 in the 100 yard breaststroke, with Lynch and Elly Faulkner following Dillon. Lynch also finished right behind Dillon in the 200 yard breaststroke.
The Commodores also were strong in the 400 yard IM, as Faulkner took the win, with Deardorf less than two seconds behind her for second place.
Vanderbilt returns to action November 18-20 at the Western Kentucky Invitiational.
