First Round Results

WINDERMERE, Fla. – The first day of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational is in the books, and the Commodores ended the first day with a team total of 305, which puts the team in a tie for 13th place. Senior Trey DelGreco led all Vanderbilt players with a two-over par, 74, on Sunday at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Fla.

DelGreco’s round was a roller coaster ride – the senior carded an eagle, two birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey in his round on Sunday. His eagle came at the par-five seventh.

Vanderbilt also counted a 75 from Adam Hofmann, a 77 from Charlie Grace, and a 79 from freshman Hunter Stewart.

“The team started out well today and we were in good position,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “As the back nine progressed, we started to lose some shots and give ground. But, I feel like we are dong some good things and the results will show soon. We are still confident.”

Texas leads the tournament after day one with a 10-under par, 278, nine strokes better than second-place North Florida. The Longhorns’ Jordan Spieth is the individual leader after firing a seven-under par, 65, on Sunday. The second round continues on Monday at Isleworth.

Inside the Ropes – By Rod Williamson
Director of Communications Rod Williamson made the trip with the men’s golf team this weekend and filed this report from the Isleworth grounds on Sunday.

Disney World Greens
Isleworth is known for its huge, undulating greens protected by massive bunkers. Although some golfers were able to manage their way around the par 72 layout, most were kept at bay by the tough pin placements.

In Memory
One of the main entry road into the beautiful club is Payne Stewart Drive, named in honor of the former club member and U.S. Open champion who died much too young in an airplane accident.

Shots of the Day
A three-way tie between Hunter Stewart’s second shot from a fairway bunker on the 399-yard par-4 first hole, just clearing a huge bunker and stopping two-feet for an easy birdie; Will Snipes’ beautiful shot to the par-3 fifth that stopped within 10-feet; and Trey DelGreco’s second at the par-5 seventh that almost went in the cup and gave him a rare eagle.

We Saw Who Driving What?
Yes, that was Shaquille O’Neill riding a mini-bike right down the street inside the compound. It looked like a scene from Disney.

Working Overtime
The Commodores arrived as Isleworth at 8 o’clock sharp and were one of the last teams off the practice range after putting in a 9-hour 20-minute day. On the range they worked on a variety of little issues that kept them from scoring better – mostly short game and putting matters.

The Tri-Champ
Vanderbilt senior Charlie Grace is not only one of the most popular players in the tournament (it seems everyone knows him from someplace), he is actually at Isleworth Country Club champion three times over as he grew up playing this course.

Long Par 3’s
The par 3’s weed out the men from the boys. The second hole is 228 yards long with a horrific green when you arrive; No. 5 is 230 yards long and 15 is a mere 223 yards from tee to green.
