MG: VU eighth after 36 at Reunion

MADISON, Miss. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in eighth place with 18 holes to play in the 2010 Bancorp South Intercollegiate at the Reunion Golf and Country Club.

Sophomore Trey DelGreco paced the Commodores by shooting 73-69–142 (two-under) in Monday’s first and second rounds. The Birmingham native bogeyed his first three holes of the day before a string of four birdies set his day in the right direction. DelGreco is tied for seventh place heading into Tuesday’s final round, in search of his third Top 10 finish this Spring.

Senior Chris Rockwell is the other Commodore in the Top 20 of the 75-player field. Rockwell shot VU’s lowest first round, a three-under 69, before coming back to even-par for the day in the second round. The Owings Mills, Md. product is tied for 15th.

As a team, Vanderbilt stands 25 strokes off the pace set by Florida. The Gators hold a five-stroke lead over host Ole Miss. North Florida and Louisiana Tech are the only other teams under par. Vanderbilt trails seventh-place Central Florida by one stroke, and is five back of a fifth-place tie between Memphis and Southern Mississippi.

“Trey and Chris played very well today,” VU Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “We need all of the guys to contribute tomorrow if we are going to make a move up the leaderboard.”

Senior Hudson Johnson stands at three-over after an even-par second round helped him move up to 33rd place. Junior Ryan Haselden is tied for 61st at eight-over, while freshman Will Snipes is in 70th at 12-over.

Tuesday’s third and final round is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. CT. The Commodores will be leaving from the first tee with UCF and Rice. Tomorrow’s forecast in Madison calls for partly cloudy skies with a high in the low 80’s.

The Reunion Golf and Country Club is setup at Par 72 over 7,305 yards this week.

Scores will be updated on golfstat.com every nine holes. Complete results will be available online following each day.
