Vanderbilt surged to a tie for third place after a stellar final round of play at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C., with a team total of 291 on Sunday and a score of 886 (291-304-291) for the tournament. The finish tied them with Ohio State and Duke for third in a field that featured 14 of the nation’s top 40 teams.

Vanderbilt’s 291 was sparked by a three-under par, 69, from Marina Alex and a one-under par 71 from freshman Anna Leigh Keith. Alex’s 69 was one of only two rounds in the 60’s on Sunday, and the sophomore from Wayne, N.J., ended the tournament in a tie for sixth with a score of 216 (71-76-69). It was Alex’s ninth consecutive top 10 finish in 2009-10. Keith finished the tournament in a tie for 10th, her best finish as a collegian, and a total of 219 (75-73-71).

The Commodores also counted a final round 75 from junior Megan Grehan and a 76 from freshman Lauren Stratton on Sunday. Stratton ended the tournament in a tie for 30th with a 224 (71-77-76) and Grehan finished in a tie for 43rd with a 227 (74-78-75). Sophomore Andrea Messer scored a 78 on Sunday and finished the tournament with a 235 (79-78-78, T-72).

Florida State won the team title with an 873 (291-288-294), one stroke ahead of co-host Wake Forest, who finished at 874 (289-291-294). Cheyenne Woods of the Demon Deacons claimed medalist honors with a 211 (70-69-72).

“It was a nice way to finish the regular season heading into SEC’s, ” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We had a great finish from Anna Leigh, who really recovered well, and had a typical Marina effort today. She got off to a great start and really made it look easy. We finished as the top SEC team at the tournament this week, and we have a lot to build on heading into SEC’s in a couple of weeks.”

The SEC Tournament will take place April 16-18 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
