April 18, 2010

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team shot a five-over 285 on Sunday to finish 10th in the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championships at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.

The Commodores shaved 13 strokes off their Saturday score to move past Mississippi State into 10th place. Vanderbilt’s Sunday total was only bettered by three teams during the final round.

All five Commodores were within two strokes of each other. Seniors Hudson Johnson and Chris Rockwell and sophomore Trey DelGreco all carded rounds of one-over 71. Johnson (+4, T-16th) and DelGreco (+5, T-18th) both finished in the event’s Top 20.

Junior Ryan Haselden shot a two-over 72, while freshman Will Snipes put together a three-over 73.

The Commodores will now have to wait until May 10 to find out if they have been selected for the 2010 NCAA Regional Championships, which will be played May 20-22. The NCAA National Championships are scheduled for the first week of June at The Honors Course in Chattanooga.

Georgia won its sixth SEC championship in 11 years, defeating Florida and Ole Miss by five strokes. Georgia’s Russell Henley took medalist honors by winning the second playoff hole over South Carolina’s George Bryan.

Designed by famed course designer Thomas Fazio, the Seaside Course opened in 2005. The SEC Golf Tournament has been played at Sea Island since 2001, and returns to the Seaside Course for the first time since 2007. The Sea Island Golf Club has enjoyed a legacy as one of America’s premier golf clubs since it opened in 1927.
