Johnson 12th, VU 11th at Schenkel

STATESBORO, Ga. — Vanderbilt senior Hudson Johnson earned his seventh Top 20 finish in eight events this year by placing 12th at the 2010 Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club.

As a team, the Commodore men’s golf team finished in 11th place overall in a stacked field of 15 squads. Vanderbilt was one of 11 teams that shots its highest total of the weekend during Sunday’s third and final round. The Commodores recorded an 11-over 299 to finish at 17-over for the event, three strokes out of the Top 10.

Johnson shot two-over 74 over the final 18 holes of play to move to even-par for the tournament. The Longview, Texas native was one of only 14 golfers to finish at par-or-better. Junior Ryan Haselden’s Sunday score of four-over 76 was not counted toward VU’s team total, but the Houston product still finished with the Commodores’ second-lowest total at four-over to tie for 32nd.

Three Commodores carded rounds of three-over 75. Senior Chris Rockwell finished in a tie for 41st at five-over, scoring for VU in each of the three rounds. Sophomore Trey DelGreco finished in a tie for 64th at 10-over, while classmate Charlie Grace was 70th at 12-over.

Auburn overcame a seven stroke deficit Sunday to win the Schenkel Invite crown for the first time. North Florida, Virginia and Alabama rounded out the top four. Individually, UNF’s Jordan Gibb won a three-way playoff to take medalist honors over Jonathan Randolph of Ole Miss and Hunter Hamrick of Alabama.

Head Coach Tom Shaw’s Commodores will have two weeks until they close out the 2009-10 regular season at the Reunion Intercollegiate in Mississippi. Vanderbilt will then travel Sea Island, Georgia for the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championships.
