MG: Sixth after day 1 at Schenkel

STATESBORO, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in a tie for sixth place following day one of the 2010 Schenzel E-Z-GO Invitational at Forest Heights Golf Club.

Junior Ryan Haselden paced the Commodores on Friday with a one-under 71 to open in a tie for ninth place. The field consists of 15 teams and a total of 81 individuals.

Teeing off on the back nine, Vanderbilt got off to a slow start. The team was six-over at the turn before Haselden and senior Hudson Johnson both went three-under on holes one through nine to get back into contention.

“The guys rallied late today and were able to slowly creep up the leaderboard. We anticipate getting off to a quicker start tomorrow and sustaining that throughout the tournament.”

Johnson finished at even-par in a tie for 20th behind an 11-player logjam at minus-1. Virginia’s Will Collins is the individual leader after carding a four-under 68 for the opening 18 holes.

North Florida holds the team lead at three-under, one stroke free of UVA. Ole Miss, Auburn and North Carolina State round out the top five, each separated by only one stroke. Vanderbilt is tied with LSU at three-over, six strokes off the lead.

Also scoring for the Commodores on Friday were senior Chris Rockwell (+1) and Charlie Grace (+3). Sophomore Trey DelGreco played par golf for 16 holes after opening up with a double bogey on 10. Another double on nine put him at four-over for the day.

Vanderbilt will tee off on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET, leaving from the first tee with Alabama and host Georgia Southern.
