Commodores finish fifth in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSE, Fla. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team shot its best round of the weekend Sunday to finish in fifth place at the 2010 Seminole Intercollegiate at SouthWood Golf Course.

The Commodores were led by their two seniors, Hudson Johnson and Chris Rockwell, who each finished in the tournament’s Top 20 this weekend. Johnson shot’s a one-under 70 on Sunday, the lowest of VU’s 15 rounds in Tallahassee. He ended the tournament at three-over in a tie for 11th position.

Rockwell earned his first Top 20 of his senior season, carding a two-over 73 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 16th.

“We got off to a fast start today and really started making up some ground on the leaders,” VU Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “We hit the back nine, which was the harder side, and the high wind caused us to lose some shots. But all in all, it was a good finish for us.”

Host Florida State won the event by one stroke over South Carolina. Arkansas and North Texas tied for third only two strokes ahead of the Commodores. Mississippi State, North Carolina, Baylor, Troy and Georgia State rounded out the Top 10 of the 14-team field.

Individually, Florida’s State Seath Lauer and South Carolina’s Paul Woodbury shared medalist honors at one-under. Only two other players in the field of 75 shot even-par.

Sophomore Trey DelGreco had another solid performance for the Commodores. DelGreco posted a 74 in the final round to finish at seven-over for 54 holes and place in a tie for 23rd.

Junior Ryan Haselden also shot a 74 on Sunday. Haselden had VU’s low second round, a 72, and finished in a tie for 28th. Freshman Will Snipes closed with a four-over 75 to place in a tie for 43rd.

Vanderbilt will compete in its third event in as many weeks this coming weekend, traveling to Stateboro, Ga., for the 2010 Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. VU then closes the regular season in Jackson, Miss., before heading to Sea Island, Ga., for the 2010 SEC Championship.

SouthWood Golf Course, designed by Fred Couples, played at 7,143 yards with a par of 71 this weekend.
