VU-Georgia postgame quotes

Recap | Box Score

Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings

On the defense…
“We had some breakdowns when [Andre Walker] left the game, then our defense on [Trey Thompkins] broke down, and then everyone collapsed [defensively].”

On the offensive woes…
“We’ve been shooting around 50% and tonight it didn’t seem like anyone could get one to drop. It’s tough to deal with when you get into point blank range and you can’t get anything. [Brad Tinsley] and [Jermaine Beal] were really good, but no one else could get anything going.”

Vanderbilt Guard Brad Tinsley:

“We had a good lead in the second but then fell apart defensively. It helped [Georgia] that they got to the line a lot. We broke down mentally and physically and they just capitalized.”

“[Georgia] figured out the press and figured out how to break it. In the first half, they were rushing, but they calmed down and started to run through it in the second.”

Georgia Head Coach Mark Fox

About the win…
“We really played well all-around tonight. Some people stepped up off of the bench. Even after we didn’t start off the second half well, the defense improved and held us together. There was a lot of unselfish play from the team. This was the type of game that really makes you feel good about yourself.”

About Vincent Williams’ play…
“He really gave us a nice boost off of the bench today. We weren’t sure how much Dustin would be able to play, as he’s had the flu all week. We worked through crazy lineups all week and needed someone to step up. Vincent made some good plays all night and helped fill that role.”

About experience from close games earlier…
“This was probably the first time all season that experience worked to our advantage. After all those close games earlier in the season we were able to stay calm and keep our composure tonight.”

About the significance of the win…
“I think all season we’ve needed a win to keep us going. No one expected anything out of this team at the beginning of the year…we were unanimously picked where we were at the beginning of the season. And the past couple of days the team has been the most beat up physically. We were only able to practice 40 minutes each day. So it was great to see the team play so well tonight because we really did need a win.”

About the defense…
“I was much more pleased with the defense tonight. The other day’s game made me nauseous, so I’m happy I’ll be able to eat tonight.”

Georgia Player Quotes

On the game…

Travis Leslie: “We had a good start but the last two minutes of the first half we slowed down. Second half we knew we couldn’t give up another big lead like we had the previous game and we came out and just played our game.”

Trey Thompkins:
“We are starting to learn our system a lot better. Everybody is starting to find their place and their spots in the offense and we’re doing it.”

On the defense this game…

Vincent Williams: “Everybody played hard, like the whole forty minutes. We’ve been practicing defense and that’s how you win games, defense.”

Trey Thompkins: “We pride ourselves on defense and when we don’t play defense the right way it bothers us. So tonight we came out and put extra emphasis on it, that we were going to defend to the best of our ability and we did so.”

“We worked so hard the whole game and we finally got one.”
