Win over NCAA champs highlights day

Nov. 20, 2010

MILLSBORO, Del. — Saturday was a day of ups and downs for Vanderbilt’s bowling team but unfortunately for the Commodores, there were a few more downs than ups. Vanderbilt won two of five games and improved just one place in team standings, sitting 10th heading into tomorrow’s finale.

The team has been plagued with inconsistent performance and today was no different. After a narrow loss in the day’s opener, the Commodores rallied to top Adelphi and then kept the momentum by beating defending national champion Fairleigh Dickinson in the third match, notching their best score of the young season in the process. However, it was downhill from there in losses to St. Francis (NY) and Sacred Heart.

“We can’t seem to handle either adversity or success,” says Coach John Williamson. “We had some really nice individual performances today and we will continue to work on our consistency and competitive edge as we go forward.”

Newcomer Samantha Hesley posted a pair of 245 scores while Brittni Hamilton had the team’s high game with a 247 and was pretty steady in the lead-off slot.

Host Maryland-Eastern Shore shot into the team lead with a monster day. The veteran Hawks had two scores north of 1,200 and averaged about 1,100 on the day as they opened a big lead over second place Central Missouri.
