MG leads Hummingbird after Day One

CASHIERS, N.C. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team got off to a fast and furious start in the first day of play at The Hummingbird Intercollegiate, and vaulted into the first-round lead after firing a seven-under par, 277, at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire, N.C. A pair of Commodores, Adam Hofmann and Trey DelGreco, are one and two, respectively, in the individual standings heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

Hofmann leads the tournament after shooting a five-under par, 66, on the par-71, 6,767-yard layout. DelGreco is a stroke behind Hofmann at four-under par, 67. Ryan Haselden also went low for the Commodores on Monday, firing a one-under par, 70, which ties him for eighth place.

Vanderbilt holds a six stroke lead over Wofford, who fired a one-under par, 283, on Monday.

The final 18 holes take place Tuesday in Sapphire, N.C.

Notes
-The Commodores are 18 holes away from securing its fourth team championship of the Shaw era (since 2006) and its fifth individual medal.
– Hofmann’s 66 is a team low so far in 2010-11, and DelGreco’s 67 is now the second lowest. Vanderbilt has now had five scores in the 60’s so far this year.
-Monday was Mills Rendell’s first action as a collegian.
-Vanderbilt’s 277 was the third-best round in the history of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate.
-Former Commodore Hudson Johnson captured medalist honors at the Hummingbird in 2008.
