MT concludes play in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – After rain showers forced delays and multiple schedule changes over the weekend, Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team wrapped up its long weekend of play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Monday.

The Commodores had three players in action on Monday as they capped a successful tournament, finishing with a final singles record of 15-6. Competing for Vanderbilt on Monday were Vijay Paul and Ryan Lipman in the Division I singles draw and Charlie Jones in the Division II singles draw.

On Monday, Jones was the only Commodore to win as he advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Georgia Tech’s Miguel Muguruza. The draw was not played past the quarterfinals.

Because of the weather delays, none of the singles or doubles draws were completed. The furthest any of the draws were played out were to the semifinals of the Division I singles where two players were named co-champions.

In Division I singles, Paul had his run come to an end in the quarterfinals when he was defeated by Duke’s Henrique Cunha, 6-2, 6-2. Lipman also lost in the quarterfinals, falling to No. 5 Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (3).

Vanderbilt will return to the courts the first weekend in October when the team goes back to Georgia to play in the Georgia Tech Invitational Oct. 3-5.
