MT tries to stay dry in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – Rain continued to wreak havoc on the schedule at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday, and once again limited the number of matches played.

The weather has forced matches indoors to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility, which has backlogged the tournament schedule. On Saturday, the Commodores only played one singles match and one doubles match.

In singles, junior Alex Zotov advanced to the round of 32 in the Division II singles draw with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tennessee’s Taylor Patrick, 6-4, 6-3.

After advancing to the round of 32 with a win on Friday, Vanderbilt’s doubles team of Charlie Jones and Andy Pulido dropped its match in the round of 32 to Coastal Carolina’s team of Dorian Sovic and Alex Tenlchauser, 8-0.

In a late result from Friday night, senior Vijay Paul kept the Commodores perfect in the Division I singles draw when he defeated South Florida’s Romain DeRidder, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the round of 32. Paul’s win moved Vanderbilt to 5-0 in the Division I singles draw.

With Zotov’s win, Vanderbilt is now 6-1 overall in singles play heading into Sunday.
Vanderbilt took eight players to the tournament, which is divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions.

Due to rain, the Division I singles and doubles draws were canceled Saturday, but will resume Sunday morning. Because of the conditions, Winthrop, Davidson, UNC-Greensboro and Wofford have withdrawn from the tournament.

Vanderbilt will continue play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday.
