Johnson 2nd, VU 5th after 36 holes in Iowa

RIVERSIDE, Iowa — Senior Hudson Johnson shot a four-under 68 on Monday to move into a tie for second place after day two of the 2009 Golfweek Collegiate Conference Challenge at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.

As a team, the Commodores moved up two spots in the event standings from seventh place to fifth. Vanderbilt carded a combined score of three-under 285 on Monday, moving ahead of Xavier and Middle Tennessee State.

Host Iowa holds a four-stroke lead over Florida State, with Baylor and Coastal Carolina rounding out the top four. The Commodores are 10 shots off the Hawkeyes’ pace with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday.

Johnson (-5) is tied with FSU’s Drew Kittleson and MTSU’s Jason Millard. That group stands only two strokes back of the individual leader, Iowa’s Brad Hopfinger (-7).

Sophomore Trey DelGreco carded a one-under 71 on Monday to move up to 26th place. DelGreco is tied with teammate Chris Rockwell at three-over after the latter shot a two-over 74 in the second round.

Junior Ryan Haselden rebounded from an opening 77 to shot an even-par 72 on Monday. He stands in a tie for 40th place with teammate Ben Klaus, who posted a four-over 76.

The three-day event continues on Tuesday, when the field is scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CT. The Commodores are set to begin on holes four through seven with players from MTSU and Coastal Carolina.
