Commodores seventh after day one in Iowa

RIVERSIDE, Iowa — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in seventh place following the day one of three at the 2009 Golfweek Collegiate Conference Challenge at the Riverside Resort.

The Commodores were paced by senior Hudson Johnson, who carded a one-under 71 in Sunday’s first round. Johnson is tied for 12th place, three strokes back of the lead shared by three players at four-under.

Senior Chris Rockwell and sophomore Ben Klaus are both at one-over in a tie for 23rd place in the field of 75 golfers. Sophomore Trey DelGreco is at four-over (T-47), while junior Ryan Haselden is one back of DelGreco (T-55).

The three-day event continues on Monday, when the Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. CT with California and New Mexico. At eight-under, Baylor holds a five-stroke lead over Middle Tennessee State. Florida State and host Iowa are third and fourth, respectively. Vanderbilt is 13 strokes off the pace, just one back from sixth-place Coastal Carolina.
