ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in seventh place after day two of the 2009 Southeastern Conference Championship at the Frederica Golf Club.

The Commodores dropped only one stroke off their Friday team score, but fell four spots in the standings as six squads broke par on Saturday.

Sophomore Ryan Haselden shot Vanderbilt’s first under-par round, carding a one-under 71 on Saturday. Haselden birdied the 18th hole for the second straight day and sits in a tie for 12th place. Junior Hudson Johnson also stands in the Top 20 of the 60-player field after two rounds. Johnson shot a second one-over 73 on Saturday and is in 18th place heading into the final 18 holes.

Senior Jon Curran carded a 75 to go to three-over for the tournament and stand in a tie for 21st. Sophomore Adam Hofmann shaved three strokes off his day-one score with a two-over 74 on Saturday. Senior Tyler Matthews carded a seven-over 79 to fall to 50th place overall.

The Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday for the third and final round. Vanderbilt will leave from the 10th tee with eighth-place Ole Miss and ninth-place Alabama.

Top-ranked Georgia shot the low round for the second straight day, stretching its lead to 10 strokes over Arkansas. Florida, South Carolina and Kentucky round out the top five. Mississippi State stands in sixth place, two strokes ahead of Vanderbilt.

Individually, Florida’s Billy Horschel used a five-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Jordan Blann of Kentucky.

The Tom Fazio-designed course features a unique layout with dramatic elevation changes, and will play 7,217 yards at par-72 this weekend. This is the second year that the tournament has been played at the Frederica Golf Club. The SEC Golf Tournament has been played at Sea Island since 2001, with six different league teams capturing championships in that period.
