Commodores' 11th after first round at Schenkel

STATESBORO, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in a three-way tie for 11th place after round one of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Country Club.

Sophomore Adam Hofmann and senior Jon Curran paced the Commodores on Friday, each shooting one-over 73 on on Forest Heights’ par-72, 6,962-yard layout.

Windy conditions prevailed as only one team, Tennessee, shot under par. The Volunteers hold a three-shot lead over North Florida. South Carolina and host Georgia Southern are tied for third.

Vanderbilt’s team total of 296 stands only four strokes out of the top five in the strong field of 18 teams. The Commodores are tied with LSU and Virginia at 11th, just one stroke behind a three-way logjam for eighth between Georgia State, Ole Miss and North Carolina State.

Along with the one-over performances of Hofmann and Curran, the Commodores’ scored a pair of three-over’s from sophomore Ryan Haselden and freshman Trey DelGreco. As a team, Vanderbilt made the turn at even-par before falling back to eight-over on the back side.

Hofmann and Curran are tied for 27th in the field of 96 golfers, while DelGreco and Haselden stand in 45th position. Senior Tyler Matthews is tied for 59th at four-over.

The Commodores will continue to play with Iowa and Oklahoma in the second round, leaving from the 10th tee at 9:36 a.m. ET Saturday. The third and final round will be played on Sunday.
