Matthews 8th, VU 10th at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas — Senior Tyler Matthews finished in a tie for eighth place to pace the Commodore men’s golf team at the 2009 Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston at the Laredo Country Club.

As a team, Vanderbilt finished in a tie for 10th place in the field of 16 teams. Baylor won the event by seven strokes over Arkansas. Lamar, UT-Arlington and Notre Dame rounded out the top five.

Matthews played the first two rounds of this tournament at one-under Friday. He finished Saturday with a five-over 77 to drop from fourth to eighth.

VU’s low third-round score came from senior Jon Curran, a three-over 75. Curran finished in a tie for 33rd in field of 88 golfers.

Sophomore Ryan Haselden followed up last week’s medalist performance with another Top 20 finish. Haselden posted the Commodores’ low round on Friday, a three-under 69, and would finish the event at seven-over to place 20th.

Freshman Trey DelGreco finished the tournament at plus-18 in a tie for 64th. Junior Hudson Johnson placed 79th at 24-over.

UTA’s Bobby Massa earned medalist honors at five-under. Jeff Gerlich of Texas State was the only other golfer under-par (-1).

The Commodores will travel to their third tournament in three weeks, playing Friday, March 20, at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
