MG third on day one at Rio Pinar

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in third place after day one of the Rio Pinar Invitational hosted by UCF.

Senior Tyler Matthews paced the Commodores, shooting a two-round total of one-under (68-75–143). Matthews’ opening round of 68 was the morning’s low score, giving the Redmond, Wash., native the 18-hole lead. After the second round, Matthews tied for seventh place in the field of 108 golfers.

Freshman Trey DelGreco stands at even-par heading into Tuesday’s third and final round, only one stroke behind Matthews at even par (74-70–144). DelGreco shot the Commodores’ low second round, a two-under 70.

Sophomore Ryan Haselden is tied for 24th place at two-over (71-75–146), one stroke in front of junior Hudson Johnson (74-73–147). Senior Jon Curran rebounded with an even-par round after playing the first 18 holes at six-over (78-72–150).

Junior Craig Tallent, competing unattached, shot an even-par first round before a three-over 75 in the second round. Tallent is tied for 31st after two rounds.

The homestanding Knights hold four-stroke lead over Louisville, with Vanderbilt and UT-Arlington just six shots off the pace. Augusta State rounds out the tournament’s top five.
