Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings

Opening Remarks:

“It could have been a lot worse. It was a good night for the first game. I thought we did a poor job with our press after the first few minutes, but that gave us a little separation at the beginning of the game. It was nice to get A.J. [Ogilvy] out… and he’s finally looking like the A.J. of old in practice.”

On A.J. Ogilvy:

“For the last two days in practice, you can see he’s coming along. It’s just a matter of time until we get him back to where he needs to be.”

On Vanderbilt’s Opening Run:

“They turned it over a few times, but sometimes what giveth also taketh away and we gave up a few points. It got the game going in the way we wanted it to go.”

On the Game’s Physical Nature:

“They’re a physical team. I was not surprised at all with the physicality of the game. Luckily, we have what we call the ‘Three-Headed Monster’ and we have a few fouls we can use.”

On Being Out-Rebounded:

“We got unlucky on a few bounces. When you shoot 59%, you’re not going to get as many offensive rebounds. I’ll take 59% every time I can get it. We need to do a better job, though. It was one of the things we talked about at the half.”

Vanderbilt Player Quotes

Jermaine Beal

On defensive intent to start game:

“We started with a press defense and were focused on getting turnovers.”

On physical play of Lipscomb:

“We knew that they just lost to Elon and were going to be motivated. We were focusing on being up for the challenge.”

On defending Lipscomb shooters:

“It was tough guarding them because we would scramble after playing the press and they have some good shooters who can make shots.”

On next games:

“It’s going to be fun playing in Maui but we’re focused on our next game against St. Mary’s.”

On preseason schedule:

“Playing in Australia definitely built good team chemistry for us because we had extra practices to know each other.”

A.J. Ogilvy

On team’s start of second half:

“We were able to get going after struggling in the first half. We were sloppy to start the game but ended strong.”

On using team’s length on defense:

“We knew that they liked to attack the basket on offense and draw fouls. We wanted to stay discipline and stay on our feet to use our length.”

On overall competition of non-conference schedule:

“We will face good competition, but we’re concentrating on the next opponent on our schedule.”

On returning to the starting lineup:

“I only care about helping the team win games.”

Jeffery Taylor

On slashing towards the basket on offense:

“My teammates did a good job of finding me when I was cutting to the basket.”

Lipscomb Head Coach Scott Sanderson

On having first 5 to 6 minutes of game back:
“We were giving a lot stuff away in the beginning. We had 41 turnovers in two games and we have to get that corrected. We have to have somebody who can take care of the ball. They scored 17 points in the first 3 minutes of the game. Before I could turn my head around, I had to get two Advils because it was 17 to whatever we had. They scored extremely quick.”

On physical play:
“We’ve been the best rebounding team in our league for the past several years. We had 17 offensive rebounds tonight and I’m glad we got them but when you go back up against 6’11 guys, you get them thrown back in your face. We’ve done a good job. We had 50 rebounds the other night. That’s a weapon for us. We won’t see a team like Vanderbilt’s size in our league and hopefully our rebounding can be a benefit for us. We felt good about our rebounding.”

On impression of Vanderbilt:
“I think they’re a top 20 team. I said it before we played them and I said it afterwards. They have 11 guys, they have length, they have guys that can shoot it with Beal and Tinsley and Jenkins. They have a huge inside presence and they have Taylor who can drive it. They have a little bit of everything and they don’t have to worry about fouls because they are so deep. You can substituted freely over there when you have that many guys and they just execute so well in the half-court.”

Lipscomb Player Quotes

Josh Slater

On offensive run:
“Well, I can’t really remember but we tried to step it up defensively and I think we knocked down a couple shots. Brandon hit a shot at the buzzer so that gave us some momentum going into halftime. We didn’t play well at the start of the game and we dug ourselves into a hole but we felt good at halftime. In the second half, we kept turning the ball over. “

On how this game affects the team:
“This is good for us. Win or lose, we are going to get better from this, I have no doubt. We’re going to come back on Wednesday and work hard and get our defense where it needs to be so we can be competitive.”
