Sophomore Marina Alex finished the Tar Heel Invitational in a tie for second place with a four-under par, 212 (71-68-73) to lead the Commodore contingent at the UNC Finley Golf Course over the weekend. Vanderbilt tied with Texas A&M with a team total of 880 (298-284-298) to finish in fourth in the team standings.

Alex had a stellar weekend for Vanderbilt, and posted a one-over par 73 in her final round on Sunday to close out her tournament. It tied her best finish as a collegian – the Wayne, N.J., sophomore also ended the 2009 Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship in a tie for second. Her finish this weekend marks her third consecutive top 10 finish in as many events this year.

True freshman Anna Leigh Keith scored her best collegiate finish, firing a 218 (73-69-76) for the weekend and finishing in a tie for 11th. Fellow freshman Lauren Stratton carded Vanderbilt’s best final round with a 71, and ended the tournament with a 227 (81-75-71), which tied her for 53rd. Brooke Goodwin also finished in a tie for 53rd with a 227 (76-73-78). Junior Megan Grehan finished with a 231 (78-74-79, T-68) for the 54-hole event.

Michigan State led wire-to-wire to win the tournament with an 860 (285-283-292), 12 strokes better than second-place Auburn, who finished with an 872 (296-286-290). Louisville’s Sara-Maude Juneau ran away with medalist honors with a 10-under par, 206 (70-68-68), six strokes better than Alex and Laura Kueny of Michigan State.

The Commodores return to the course next weekend at the Stanford Fall Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. The tournament will be the final event for Vanderbilt in 2009.
