Track posts strong first day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Vanderbilt’s track and field squad opened this weekend’s competition on the right track as five Commodores recorded top-five finishes in their respective events at the first day of the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.

A trio of Vanderbilt’s 60-meter sprinters (Anna Carr, Taylor Jackson and Josalyn White) advanced to tomorrow’s finals after placing in the top-10 of the preliminaries. Carr led the Commodore trio with a time of 7.81, placing fifth. Carr set the VU 60-meter school record (7.65) at last weekends Kentucky Invite.

Fellow freshman Teegan Hill recorded Vanderbilt’s top 400-meter time of the young season with a 57.70, good for seventh place. VU teammate, Sheri Sullivan placed sixth in the 400-meter open section, running a 59.41.

Sophomore sensation Rita Jorgensen finished seventh in the 3000 meter run, crossing the finish line at 9:52.56. Jorgensen’s time ranks sixth in school history.

The Commodores had another good showing in the one-mile run as three Commodores placed in the top-six of their respective heats. Freshman Louise Hannallah led VU in the mile, turning in 5:10.31 too place sixth. Senior Amanda Scott and Kate Southcote-Want both posted top-five finishes in the one-mile open section with times of 5:16.32 and 5:18.36, respectively.

Kristabel Doebel-Hickok and Adrienne DiRaddo followed suit with top-five finishes of their own in 5000 meter run. Doebel-Hickok led the charge with a 17:36.18, good for fourth place while DiRaddo came in one spot behind with a 17:49.62.

Junior Mallory Hitt finished in sixth place in the high jump, topping the 5’3 mark.
