Goodwin makes hole-in-one

April 4, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. — Sophomore Brooke Goodwin made a hole-in-one on the sixth hole of the Karsten Golf Club in route to a one-under par 71 on the first day of the ASU/Ping Invitational, which ties her for a tie for seventh place. As a team, Vanderbilt is in a tie for 10th place with an eleven-over par, 299.

Goodwin made an ace on the 176-yard par 3 sixth hole, which propelled her to the first-round 71. The sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., added three birdies to go along with her eagle on number six.

“We really didn’t know she made the hole in one until getting halfway to the green,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “She said she didn’t hit it very well and thought she came up short. It was awesome. The next hole was a par three as well and I told her to go back-to-back. That shot on seven looked more like it had a chance to go in than the one on six. She hit it solid and it rolled past the hole about 8 feet. She made the birdie. A total of three on two holes…not bad at all.”

Freshman Megan Grehan is in a tie for 14th after shooting an even-par 72 after the first day of play. Senior Liebelei Lawrence fired a one-over 73, and the Commodores counted an 83 from senior Julie Bartholomew. Junior Jacqui Concolino carded an 88 on the first day of play.

“We talked coming into this tournament that this was going to be the start of a great finish to our season,” said Allen. “After about 6 holes I could really feel things starting to turn our way. We just came up a 4th score short of really putting together a great round but I’m very confident that we’ll get that score soon.”

Southern Cal has a seven stroke lead over Arizona State to lead the 17-team field. The Trojans shot a seven-under 281 on Friday.

Dewi Claire Schreefel of Southern Cal leads all individuals with a four-under 68. She leads Krystie Caithness of Georgia by one stroke, and a group of four players in third place, all at 70.

The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday.
