SORRENTO, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in a tie for 15th place with New Mexico after firing a first-round 295 (+7) in the first round of the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club. Senior Leibelei Lawrence paced the Commodore effort with an even-par 72.

“We’re encouraged by shooting three under par on the back nine,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We hope to feed off momentum we finished with and play strong tomorrow. Everyone kind of walked away with something positive today. Jacqui and Megan finished their back nine at one-under, and Brooke had a solid round altogether. There’s a bunch of teams bunched up there where we are, and we could move up a good bit with a solid score tomorrow.”

Lawrence’s 72 was followed by Brooke Goodwin’s 73, Jacqui Concolino’s 74, Megan Grehan’s 76, and Julie Bartholomew’s 81.

Southern Cal leads after the first round of the tournament after shooting a seven-under par, 281, one stroke better than Duke, who is in second place at 282.

Alison Whitaker of Duke leads all individuals with a seven-under par, 65, one stroke better than Cydney Clanton of Auburn, who ended the first round with a 66.

The second 18-holes will begin Monday morning at the RedTail Golf Club.
