GREENVILLE, S.C. — Junior Commodore golfer Jon Curran finished as the runner up in the Furman Intercollegiate this weekend after firing a two-under par, 214 (71-72-71), to lead Vanderbilt. VU ended the tournament in a tie for fourth place out of 24 teams with a team score of 888 (295-302-291).
Curran finished the tournament one off the individual lead, which went to Jonathan Hodge of Tennessee-Chattanooga, who carded a 213 (69-73-71). Sophomore Hudson Johnson fired a one-under par 71 on Sunday to vault into a tie for seventh place overall. Hudson ended Sunday with a three-day total of 219 (74-74-71). The Mocs (287-291-296=874), who captured their first Furman Intercollegiate title, led at the conclusion of all three rounds at the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
The Commodores jumped from seventh to fourth after a third-round 294 on Sunday, and ended the tournament with an 888 (295-302-291, +24). Vanderbilt finished 14 strokes behind UTC, who won the tournament championship with a 874 (287-291-296).
Other Vanderbilt scores for the weekend were Brett Lange, who finished in a tie for 54th with a 228 (71-78-79), Billy Whalen, who ended in a tie for 64th with a 229 (79-77-73), and Ryan Haselden, who finished with a score of 236 (77-78-81, T-101).
The start of the final round was delayed until 11:45 a.m. after second round play had to be completed on Sunday morning due to Saturday’s play being suspended by darkness.
Vanderbilt returns to the course April 6-8 at The Reunion Tournament in Jackson, Miss.
