MG second halfway thru Hummingbird

SAPPHIRE, N.C. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in second place after day one of the 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina University at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Junior Hudson Johnson stands in second place individually after carding a three-under 68 in Monday’s opening round. Johnson stands only one stroke behind day-one leader David Johnson of Central Florida.

As a team, Vanderbilt trails UCF by two strokes with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday. The Commodores (-1) and Knights (-3) were the only two teams to score under-par Monday. Akron, host Western Carolina and Radford round out the top five.

Sophomore Ryan Haselden also sits under-par for the Commodores after shooting a minus-one 70. Haselden is in a five-way tie for fourth place, three strokes off the pace.

All five Commodores are among the Top 30 participants in the tournament’s 83-player field. Senior Tyler Matthews is tied for 11th at one-over (72). Junior Chris Rockwell tied for 16th place at plus-two (73). Sophomore Adam Hofmann’s three-over 74 did not count toward Vanderbilt’s team score — marking the lowest non-scoring round of the day.

The Hummingbird Intercollegiate is a two-day, 36-hole event. Final round tee times are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday morning. Vanderbilt will leave at 10:50 a.m., joining UCF and third-place Akron off the first tee.

The Country Club of Sapphire Valley is a private, member-owned club that features a newly renovated valley golf course, new clubhouse, state-of-the-art fitness center and tennis center. The course meanders through the backdrop of a mature hardwood forest and scenic mountains that provide for breath taking views and a natural setting. The course, which sits on a level valley floor despite its mountainous surroundings, was originally designed by George Cobb and recently updated by Bill Bergin.

Results and recaps from the Hummingbird Intercollegiate will be posted at www.CatamountSports.com following each round of the two-day event.
