Baker, Zotov advance to ITA Semifinals

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The start of singles competition dominated the majority of the day at the ITA Southeast Championships on Friday, but it was Vanderbilt’s duo of Adam Baker and Alex Zotov that continued to headline the Commodores’ start.

After posting a pair of wins in doubles competition on Thursday, the Vanderbilt duo continued their hot play Friday with a 9-7 win over Kentucky’s team of Brad Cox and Bruno Agostinelli in the quarterfinals.

Baker and Zotov will now face Tennessee’s tandem of Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago in the semifinals Sunday.

The Commodores also had a solid showing in the first round of singles competition. Zotov continued with success at the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ben Clos of Murray State. Freshman Charlie Jones earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bryan Swartz of Tennessee.

Baker’s success in doubles action did not carry over to singles play, where he fell to Kentucky’s Brad Cox, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 128. Also losing was junior James Moye, who lost a hard-fought match to Kentucky’s Alex Musialek, 7-6, 7-5.

Following a bye in the first round, fellow junior Vijay Paul was upset in the round of 64 by Jorge Vazquez of Memphis, 6-4, 6-3.

Vanderbilt will continue play at the ITA Southeast Championships Saturday with two rounds of singles action in the main draw and consolation draw taking place.
