ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team, behind senior Liebelei Lawrence’s fourth-place finish, ended the Margaret Branch NCAA Preview in fifth place with a team total of 881 (295-298-288). Lawrence, who had her best individual result as a collegian, ended the tournament with only one bogey and ten birdies in route to a nine-under, 210 (71-70-69).

Lawrence and the Commodores stormed back in the final round against one of the toughest fields in women’s collegiate golf, moving up four spots from Tuesday to end the tournament in fifth place. Vanderbilt counted a 71 from junior Jacqui Concolino, a 73 from freshman Megan Grehan, and a 75 from sophomore Brooke Goodwin in Wednesday’s final round. The Commodores finished 21 strokes behind champion Duke, who finished the tournament with an 860 (287-286-287), one stroke better than second-place USC (292-285-284=861).

“We finished fifth in a very strong field on the course where we play nationals,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We hope this will be good for momentum when we go to Chapel Hill next week to defend our win there last year. Today we got on the right side of momentum, unlike yesterday, where things slipped on us a little bit down the stretch.”

Lawrence’s final score of 210 put her six strokes back of champion Dewi Claire Schreefel, who led wire-to-wire and captured the tournament by four strokes over Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst, the 2007 Mason Rudolph individual champion.

“Liebelei had it going today,” said Allen. “She really was hitting her irons well today, and it was one of those rounds where you knew she was going to post a good score. It was her day out there today.”

Vanderbilt next takes to the course at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational, where the Commodores are defending champions, October 4-6 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
