MG: VU Moves To 11th at NCAAs

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team shot a 12-under 276 Friday to move up two spots into 11th place after day two of the 2007 NCAA West Regional at Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course.

At 17-under after 36 holes, the Commodores stand only two strokes behind three teams tied for eighth at 19-under — Arizona, Stanford and New Mexico. Day one leader UCLA remains ahead of the field, one stroke up on South Carolina. Southern Cal and host Arizona State are tied for third, nine strokes off the lead.

Sophomore Jon Curran went seven-under on Friday to lead the Commodores, making seven birdies against no bogeys. At eight-under, Curran stands in a tie for 12th place with 18 holes to play Saturday.

Senior Luke List rebounded in the second round, shooting a bogey-free round and carding a four-under 68.

Freshman Hudson Johnson shot a one-under 71 to make it back to even-par for the event. Junior Billy Whalen was even-par on Friday, while sophomore Tyler Matthews went two-over.

Arizona State’s Benjamin Alvarado and Southern Cal’s Jamie Lovemark share the lead after day two at 12-under. First-day leader Eric Flores dropped back into a tie for third with New Mexico’s Charlie Beijam at 11-under.

The Top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships, May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. In 11th place with one day to play, the Commodores are three strokes ahead of a four-team pack at 14-under — California, UNLV, Pepperdine and Wake Forest.
