Lacrosse Handles Lehigh, 21-4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman Sarah Downing scored four goals to lead all scorers as the 19th-ranked Vanderbilt lacrosse team defeated Lehigh, 21-4, Tuesday at the VU Lacrosse Complex.

Nine Commodores tallied goals in all, including hat-tricks by junior Margie Curran, sophomore Carolyn Gioia and freshman Carter Foote. Senior Kendall Thrift had four assists to go with her two goals, while freshman Allie Frank recorded four points on two goals and two assists.

Vanderbilt took control of the game early, scoring the first goal at the 28:59 mark of the first half as Curran assisted Thrift. Vanderbilt would score the first four goals, with Curran and Thrift each contributed three points to the run.

Lehigh’s lone tally of the first half came from Amy Chamberlain to make the score 4-1 with just over 10 minutes elapsed. By halftime, the Commodores would score 10 more goals to open up a sizable lead at the break.

Downing recorded her first career hat-trick during a four-minute stretch of the first half.

The game slowed down in the second half, as both teams possessed the ball for long periods. Lehigh would score three goals in the second half, including two straight from Sara MacIntyre, before Vanderbilt closed with four scores by Foote, Frank, Downing and Gioia.

The Commodores continue their current homestand this weekend, when No. 1 North Carolina visits the VU Lacrosse Complex on Saturday, March 10, at 12 Noon CT.
