PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team will join fifth-ranked Alabama and eighth-ranked Coastal Carolina in the final group Tuesday for the conclusion of the 2007 John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club.

Improved conditions on Monday helped 13 of the field’s 15 teams see lower scores than in Sunday’s first round. Vanderbilt shaved nine shots off its team score, carding a seven-over 295 on Monday.

The Commodores currently stand in a tie for third place with UCF at +23, just one stroke behind Coastal Carolina and five strokes behind leader Alabama.

“As a team, we had a fairly poor start today,” VU Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “Those first five or six holes are really tough to start out on. But just when things looked like they may be snowballing, we started to pick up the pieces. We played with a lot more confidence on the last nine holes than we had on the first six. We made it into the last group tomorrow and we have to come out ready to play from the start.”

Both sophomore Jon Curran and senior Luke List scored under-par on Monday. Curran stands in second place at even-par, just three strokes behind Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina.

List is also in the tournament’s top five after going one-under on Monday. He avenged a triple bogey from Sunday’s round by eagling the 18th hole on Monday.

Tuesday’s third and final round begins on the 6910-yard, par-72 layout of Sawgrass’ Oceanside Course — the former home of the PGA Tour’s Tournament Players Championship — at 8 a.m. ET. The Commodores will tee off with Alabama and Coastal Carolina at 9:30 a.m.
