PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands only one stroke behind fifth-ranked Alabama after the first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club.
The Commodores shot a 16-over 304 on Sunday, led by sophomore Jon Curran’s one-over 73 — the third-best round of the day. Senior Luke List stands in a tie for fifth after shooting a 75.
“Luke and Jon played a couple of great rounds in really adverse conditions,” VU Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “And Tyler, Dos and Billy really held their own on a day when things could have gotten away from us. Today’s performance was a true team effort.”
Junior Billy Whalen and sophomore Tyler Matthews both scored for the Commodores, both shooting 78. Senior Dos Goldsmith carded an eight-over 80.
Blustery conditions prevailed Sunday, as players faced 40 degree temperatures and 20-mph winds on the 6910-yard, par-72 layout of Sawgrass’ Oceanside Course — the former home of the PGA Tour’s Tournament Players Championship.
After Alabama and Vanderbilt, Georgia State, Charlotte and Augusta State round out the top five, ahead of host North Florida, defending champion UCLA, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana State. Notre Dame, South Carolina, Pepperdine, UAB, Tennessee and UCF round out the standings after day one.
Day two of the 54-hole event takes place on Monday, with the final round to follow on Tuesday.
The tournament’s 15-team field features 10 squads ranked in Golfweek’s Top 50, including No. 8 Coastal Carolina, No. 9 Tennessee and No. 10 UCLA.
