VU Swim Wraps Up First SEC Tourney

Feb. 11, 2007

LEXINGTON, Kent. – They didn’t take the event by storm, but with the support from swim fans across the conference, the Vanderbilt swim team completed their first SEC swimming and diving championship since 1990 over the weekend.

At the conclusion of the weekend’s events, where Vanderbilt placed 10th out of the 10 participating teams, the Commodore swimmers received wild applause and standing a standing ovation from all fans in attendance.

“It was a great experience for everyone involved,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Jeremy Organ said. “Everyone is so happy to see us back swimming in the SEC. The support was overwhelming. We were very well received and it bodes well for the future of our program.”

The Commodore team, composed entirely of walk-on athletes from the Vanderbilt student body, saw personal and season bests across the board. With only four seniors on the 23-person roster, the improved times serve as strong encouragement for upcoming seasons.

“It’s a hard situation to go into,” Organ said. “You’re at one of the fastest meets in the country and you’re facing swimmers that can swim on an Olympic level. Many of our swimmers had no idea they’d even be swimming competitively this year. Then all of a sudden here you are at the SEC meet and you’re competing against the nation’s best. To face that level of competition was a great experience for all of us.”

The Commodores will conclude their inaugural season this weekend at the Last Chance Meet at the University of Georgia.
