FORT ATKINSON, Wi. – Vanderbilt won four of five team games Saturday but slipped into fourth place at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Cheeseland Invitational.
The Commodores lost a close game with No. 3 rated Fairleigh Dickinson after topping Southern, Minnesota State-Mankato, Elmhurst and No. 6 New Jersey City. They are within striking distance of first place Nebraska.
“For the most part, we did a good job picking up our spares,” said Coach John Williamson, “but we never really caught fire and had a breakout run. Karen Grygiel had a very good day, and Amanda Halter was steady most of the time. It was pretty much a blue collar day for us.”
Vanderbilt, 15-4 on the year, lost to FDU in that fifth game by a 953-924 margin and as a team missed four routine spares in the process. In contrast, the Commodores picked up every spare shot except four splits in their win over New Jersey City in the fourth game of the day.
Grygiel sits in second place individually with Josie Earnest seventh, Michelle Peloquin 17th and Halter 18th heading into Sunday’s final competition.
Vanderbilt will meet Arkansas State and have a bye round in team play, then faces Southern and Minnesota State in Baker play to end the tournament.
