Men's Golf Shares Lead at Mason Rudolph

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands tied for the lead after the first round of the 2006 Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Commodores are tied with Ole Miss after completing the first of three rounds of play with a two-over-par 290.

Vanderbilt sophomore Jon Curran — the tournament’s runner-up a year ago — stands in second place. Curran carded a two-under 70 and is two shots back from UT-Chattanooga’s Mitchell Brock.

Blustery weather conditions prevented many low scores on the day, as temperatures dipped into the low 50’s and winds were gusting around 15 miles per hour.

“Our guys fought hard today under adverse conditions,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “We’re not used to playing the Legends Club under these cool, windy conditions, so we were in the same boat as the rest of the teams.”

Behind Brock and Curran, four players — Mercer’s Silas Sutton, Mississippi State’s Matt Fast, Ole Miss’ Brice Bailey and Rice’s Kaz Hoffman — stand tied for third place at one-under. The tournament’s “top 10” currently contains 16 players, as three are tied for seventh at even and seven are tied for 10th at one-over.

In the team competition, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss hold a three-stroke lead over UT-Chattanooga (293). Rice (294) and North Florida (298) round out the top five. Defending champion Virginia struggled on day one, posting a 24-over score of 312.

Four Commodores stand in the Top 20 of the 75-man field. After Curran, senior Luke List and freshman Hudson Johnson each went one-over to stand in a tie for 10th. Junior Brett Lange’s two-over 74 was good enough for 17th place.

Senior Dos Goldsmith (78, T-52nd) also competed for the Commodores, while junior John Ebert (76, T-40th) and sophomore Tyler Matthews (74, T-17th) played as individuals.

The 14-team field, competing on the par-72, 7190-yard Ironhorse Course, will play 18 holes on Monday, beginning at 8 a.m. CT from the first and 10th tees. Vanderbilt begins play in the second round at 9:30, playing with Ole Miss and Chattanooga. Tuesday’s final round of 18 is also scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CT.
