NCAA Pursuit Continues for Contreras

Contreras advances to the NCAA Round of 32

ORLANDO, Fla. – Concluding the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship, senior Fernanda Contreras defeated Ohio State’s Isabelle Boulais in straight sets at the USTA Tennis Complex in Orlando, Florida, to advance to the Round of 32.

“I’m really excited for tomorrow. It’s going to be a battle and I’m glad to wear the gold star V one more day,” said Contreras.

In a tight first set, Contreras came back from a 1-3 deficit to tie the match with Boulais, 4-4. Taking the lead, Contreras went up 5-4 over the Buckeye freshman.

Boulais tied the match again at 6-6 to send the set into a set tiebreaker. Contreras dominated in the tiebreaker to win the first set 7-6 (3).

Staying strong in the second set, No. 6 Contreras swiftly took the lead over Boulais earning a 4-0 lead.

The freshman fought back to take one game before Contreras claimed her 31st victory on the season to secure her spot in the Round of 32.

Contreras will face Texas’ Petra Granic, who secured her spot in the Round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Penn’s Iuliia Bryzgalova.

Christina Rosca concluded her phenomenal junior season falling to Texas Tech’s Felicity Maltby, 6-2, 7-5. Rosca wraps up her season with a 30-15 overall record.
