Augenstein and Gordon lead MG at Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Senior Will Gordon and junior John Augenstein each carded a three-under par 69 to lead the Commodores in the second round of the Carmel Cup at the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links on Saturday.  For the tournament, Vanderbilt is in seventh place with a total of 713 (361-352) after two rounds of competition.

Gordon and Augenstein are each tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard with a 137 total.  Other Commodore counting scores on Saturday were a two-under par 70 from sophomore Harrison Ott and a pair of 72’s from freshman Reid Davenport and senior Patrick Martin.

“It was a much better day today I thought,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh.  “All six guys were in it and we had some energy. We were close to having a real good round, but we didn’t do all the things we needed to do and we have to adjust better to the way the course is playing.”

Oklahoma leads the tournament with a 44-under par, 676 (340-336) and holds a 15-shot lead on second-place Georgia.

“This team has to continue to fight to form its own identity and that happens every single day in the type of competitive character, focus, and attitude you have,” said Limbaugh.  “All of those things you have full control over. It’s really early in the season and tomorrow is another opportunity for us to grow and we have to be excited about that and play with passion.”

The third and final round of the tournament concludes on Sunday with tee times beginning at 6:50 a.m. Pacific time.
