. — The Vanderbilt Commodores picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 decision over Lipscomb Friday evening at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. VU is now 1-2-2 while Lipscomb owns a 1-3-0 record.

Sophomore Kyle Lapkewych picked up his first goal of the season when he slid a shot into the top corner of the net on a pass from junior Ryan Paugh for the only score of the game at the 23:48 mark. Lipscomb had two scoring opportunities late in the game when Nathan Bussey hit the right side of the pole and deflected back into the field with 16 minutes left in the game. Then, with one minute remaining, Alan Brewer shot a bullet down the middle, but it was blocked by Vanderbilt’s Jordan Dale just in front of the goal.

Vanderbilt’s freshman goalkeeper, Conor Ellinger, picked up the win playing the entire game totaling three saves. He is now 1-0-1 on the season and earned his first career shutout.

Vanderbilt totaled 10 shots in the contest, four on goal, while Lipscomb numbered 11 shots, three on goal.

“We didn’t perform as well as we have in the last two weeks, but we were able to pull out the win,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We were very choppy – there was no flow – but we were able to keep it together. We did what we needed to do to win and it feels great to have our first win at home.”

Vanderbilt hosts Davidson, College of Charleston and Western Kentucky in the Vanderbilt University Holiday Inn/PUMA Classic Friday and Sunday.
