Commodore midfielders looking to keep momentum from 2019

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2020 Vanderbilt lacrosse season is less than a month away, and the program returns a solid group of midfielders.

Vanderbilt’s midfielders are vital in generating control of the ball after draw controls and transitioning the Vanderbilt defense to offense. For example, Vanderbilt scored 11 straight goals against Butler in 2019 after winning eight of the 11 draw controls.

Returning senior Gwyn Devin and a trio of sophomores and juniors – Bri Gross, Elizabeth Scarrone and Callie Sundin – will be ones to watch this season in the Commodore midfield. Not only were they forces on the field, but all were tabbed to the 2019 AAC All-Academic team for their work in the classroom.

Devin, the lone returning captain, is 10 goals shy of 50 and only two points shy of 50 for her career. Last season against Louisville, she notched a hat trick that proved to be the difference in a 9-8 overtime contest. She started all 16 games last season and returns as the vocal leader for the Dores.

Gross led all freshmen midfielders with 22 points – 12 goals and 10 assists in her first campaign in the black and gold. In the matchup with Kennesaw State, she notched a career-high four assists and recorded a career-high seven draw controls in a win over UConn.

Scarrone added 16 points, a dozen goals and four assists for the Commodore offense. In a resounding 15-goal win over Butler last season, she won a career-high four draw controls.

Callie Sundin notched 17 points, 13 of them being goals to go along with four assists. Her 13 goals were second on the team among freshmen. Last season, her personal-best in goals and points was four – all in 20-11 victory against Kennesaw State.

That quartet has caused an impressive 48 turnovers combined and scooped up a total of 128 draw controls.

Vanderbilt begins the 2020 season on the road against Wagner on Feb. 9 before its first home game Feb. 22 against Lehigh. All lacrosse games are free admission.
